What You Have To Know About Dachshund Training
Can you honestly argue against Dachshunds being one of the most adorable dog breeds around? Unfortunately when it comes down to it, Dachshund Training is an entirely different matter all in all as these cute little hot dog shaped pets is really quite ornery. But, do they actually need special training to make sure their attitude remains under control? Let's look more closely.
What Makes Dachshunds Different
Dachshund training is not easy. They need a lot of patience as these little guys are amongst the more hard headed, independent breeds you'll come across. They like to make their own decisions, go for what they want, and they are quite patient in waiting you out to get it.
The first thing you should keep in mind and constantly say to yourself is that your Dachshund, no matter how adorable he is, is still a dog - an animal that has to be treated properly. The moment you start treating your dog like a little person or giving him the privileges that comes with that small size, you lose the advantage in your training.
Keep in mind that if you fail to train your Dachshund, you're actually putting him in danger. With that strong character and fiery will, they can easily get themselves into trouble. And their little backs can be in danger if they climb on things or jump too much - both trainable behaviors.
The Basics of Dachshund Training
To start with, be sure that you start young and get your Dachshund as much exercise as possible from a young age. Yes, Dachshunds are small dogs, but they are raised as hunting dogs that dig out vermin. They have a lot of energy and when they don't get the opportunity to use that energy, it will come back to haunt your home.
If your Dachshund has the exercise he needs, the training process will be less difficult. But, it still needs to be intense and well thought out.
Short Sessions - Dachshund training should be done in short 5 minute sessions. If they decide they don't want to listen to you, it can be hard to break through, so you want to get as much done as you can before they have a chance to think about whether they would like to follow along.
Fundamentals - A Dachshund should be trained in basics like "sit", "stay" and particularly "down". Dachshunds have severe limitations on how they can jump and climb. Carry them along the stairs and don't let them jump on home furniture. Train them early that these are not allowed.
Clicker Training - Dachshund Training works especially well in combination with a clicker. Dachshunds do not have fantastic hearing, but they do react well to sharp, single sounds and clicker training can be done in quick bursts that suit their attention span nicely.
Rewards - Punishing a Dachshund is not very effective due to their strong will. They will grow hard headed and possibly aggressive with excessive punishment. Instead, use positive reinforcement to reward good behaviors. Dachshunds love physical attention as well as snacks as rewards for good behavior.
Dachshund training is a trying experience. It takes time, effort and a great deal of persistence on your part. Most of all don't let your adorable little puppy get the better of you. The second you give in to him, you lose the fight and it can be hard to regain that ground as the dog gets older.
