Learning More About Earl Grey Tea

Almost everyone has at least heard of Earl Grey tea, and if you're a science fiction fan, you've no doubt heard Patrick Stewart's distinctive voice ordering "Tea, Earl Grey, hot" from the replicator station in his quarters on the USS Organization, but it may surprise you that Earl Grey tea leaves are used in an even number of ways that extend well beyond flavoring the most famous Sci-Fi ship's captain's drink.

For example, are you aware that you could buy Kit-Kat candy bars in Japan that have been flavored with Earl Grey? You really can! And if you're looking for something a little more exotic, you could try a drink called "London Fog," which is made by mixing Earl Grey tea with steamed milk as well as vanilla syrup.

It doesn't stop there though. Earl Grey tea is used as a flavoring for many sorts of cakes and confectionery, such as chocolates and savory sauces. Where the sauces are concerned, the usual method of adding the flavor is to include tea bags to the stock, boiling them for a few minutes, then discarding the tea bags. For sweet recipes similar to chocolates, varying amounts of loose tea is added to melted butter or hot cream, then strained away after the flavoring is properly infused.

And don't think there's only "one kind" of Earl Grey tea, either. For instance, Twinings' makes a blend of Earl Grey bearing the official endorsement and signature of Richard Grey (the 6th Earl Grey). Additionally they make a blend called Lady Grey, which is made with lemon and Seville orange, in addition to the traditional bergamot (like its cousin, it too bears the official endorsement and also signature of Richard Grey).

Additionally, you can get Russian Earl Grey (commonly seen in France, Belgium, Denmark, The Netherlands, and Sweden), made by the Lipton company. This blend contains black tea, citrus peels, bergamot flavoring, and flower petals. You can also get a blend called Rooibos, which makes use of a South African herbal tea (Rooibos) in the place of traditional Chinese black tea.

As you can see then, not only is Earl Grey used in a number of applications that go well beyond a steaming cup, but within the family of Earl Grey teas, there is also quite a lot of variety to be found. Drink up and enjoy!
