Canadian Rockies's Most Rewarding Scenic Drive For Vacationers
Paralleling the Trans-Canada Highway just outside of Banff is the Bow Valley Parkway which is the original highway that was finished from Banff to Lake Louise in 1920. This first highway is a beautiful drive in the Canadian Rockies. If you're visiting Banff, it is an attractive drive for every visitor.
After 1950, when the Trans-Canada Highway was completed, this original highway became a secondary street and was labeled the 1A until 1986 when an improvement changed the road into the Bow Valley Parkway. Because the Bow Valley climbs and winds, it gives visitors a better view of the stunning peaks of the mountains and beautiful green valley.
The Canadian Rockies has a number of well-known drives and this is one of the definitely drive roads. It's a well-signed parkway with spots to stop, slower traffic, and is terrific for wildlife watching. Nearly all of Banff National Park's big game wildlife has been seen at, one point or another, from the parking lots and from driving along this road.
There are interpretive exhibits, places to rest, trails, waterfalls, campsites, meadows, accommodations, cabins, a historic site, and, not to mention the obvious, but also the impressive Bow River, along the parkway. For those who like to hike, there are numerous trails that lead to awesome natural sites, such as waterfalls and lakes. Campers will find several wilderness-surrounded campgrounds and individuals looking for more facilities will be grateful to hear that there are cabins and chalets at several points along the highway.
The Bow Valley Parkway is a must-see drive even if visitors only drive and stop at a few pullouts. The vistas are spectacular. If explorers drive early or late in the day, most likely in the late spring/early summer or in the early fall, the opportunities of seeing animals are excellent. Bears are commonly seen grazing at the side of the road. Don't get annoyed when getting close to a traffic problem, this is a hint that there is wildlife ahead.
There are more than 30 points of interest on this parkway including one of Banff's most visited hiking trails, Johnston Canyon, so be sure to allow at least a portion of the day to drive this parkway. An excursion will add on an extra three or four hours to the time-frame.
